What keyboard do you use? And which keys exactly are you pressing?
It seems there is some mixup between Backspace and Del, maybe because they share the same position on the keyboard. For the opposite case - how to send Ctrl+Alt+Del to the guest - see

Maybe applying some of the tips there in reverse could help.

Since I don't have a Mac, I have no idea about the way VMWare Fusion works, so I'm just guessing here.
