Oiseau, thank you for the suggestion. I was not aware that this function existed. I have fiddled with it but not very successfully so far. Still, I will take a closer look and see if I can bend it to my will.

How about searching for all PRJ files (e.g. with Total Commmander, Alt+F7, *.prj). Note the folder, copy the relevant .prj to the Desktop/USB stick.

On the laptop, copy the .prj to the correct folder.

c:\Users\Public\Documents\Transit NXT\config\global\11630-065_en_fr_zh_sv_nl.PRJ

The config file:

c:\Program Files (x86)\Transit NXT\bin\STARTE.INI

The relevant path for projects:

[PATHS]
CONFIG\GLOBAL=C:\Users\Public\Documents\Transit NXT\config\global
CONFIG\SYS=C:\Users\Public\Documents\Transit NXT\config\sys
CONFIG\USERS=C:\Users\Public\Documents\Transit NXT\config\users
CONFIG\CUSTOMERS=C:\Users\Public\Documents\Transit NXT\config\customers
DB=C:\Users\Public\Documents\Transit NXT\db
---this one---PROJECTS=C:\Werk

Perhaps you want to make sure that the path is identical both on the desktop and the laptop computer.

You don't say what version of Transit you have.
Forward only works with packages, i.e. projects packed and sent to you in .PPF format, NOT with projects you create yourself (the manual is very clear about this).
And the Pack function, which creates the .PPF file, is only enabled in Transit Professional, NOT in Transit Freelance Pro.
If you have the Freelance version, you have to do it manually, i.e. follow Cafetrans' advice, but it's a messy solution.

I use an external SSD 1 terabyte USB drive (E: in my case) for all my projects, so all the Transit NXT folders APART FROM \bin are on E: all the time.
That way I can access my projects on any computer on which Transit is installed (I have Transit Professional on 2 desktops in 2 different countries, and Transit Freelance Pro on my laptop). The key is to have a unique location for all one's data folders (config, projects, reference, etc.), which my setup ensures.
But this obviously has to be done when you (re)install Transit, i.e. when the installation program prompts you for a location.

Good point. That brings me to the next idea: If *you* create the projects, maybe you can be the projects for yourself?

Thank you Hans, Richard and ON for your suggestions.

I am running Transit NXT Freelance Pro v4.0 SP9. I do not create the projects, they are sent by the client and I just unpack them and then repack them later, so in theory I should be able to forward them. I have run into problems with dictionaries supplied by the client; still attempting to clear that up.

My situation appears to be the inverse of Richard, in that only have one PC, but the files ooccasionally need to be in two places depending on the situation. Normally my files are on a network server but occasionally they need to be on my notebook PC and it is Transit's apparent inflexibility when it comes to project location that is causing the issue.

I still think the forwarding idea is the most likely to work so I will continue to experiment with that.

Workarounds for buying InDesign filter?

Hi everybody

A regular client of mine has a couple of InDesign files he needs to have translated. So I just asked for the price of the InDesign filter - 1,050 Euros! Seems a bit too much for translating a couple of files without knowing whether I will ever need it again.

Is there any kind of workaround that I could use? I do not own any other kind of TM tool that I might use as intermediate (but even buying a MemoQ licence would be cheaper than getting the InDesign filter - though I have never worked with MemoQ and don't know how complex that would be for an experienced Transit NXT user).

I own a Transit NXT Freelance Pro version.

Any suggestions?

TIA

see e.g.:

"Translate your InDesign files!
InDesign software is expensive and many translators have to refuse InDesign jobs because they don’t have the software.Language Terminal’s free InDesign converter allows you to work with InDesign in any CAT tool." ( [url removed] )

some info: [url removed]

You basically use Language Terminal to convert your InDesign file into a .mqxliff file, which most CAT tools can handle (also free ones). When you finish translating the .mqxliff file, you upload it back to the LT, and it converts it back into an InDesign file.

Post title: Do I need MemoQ for Language Terminal?

Hi Michael,

thanks for the hint! As I understand from the video, Language Terminal is part of MemoQ, right?

I talked to STAR again, mentioning that I think the price is a bit steep for my job. They said I could also get a time-limited new Transit NXT Freelance Pro licence including the InDesign-Filter. This would come up to 200 Euros excluding VAT for 3 months. Sounds much more feasible, though I am not sure about tampering with my current Transit licence.

Any other suggestions?

TIA
Iris

Are you aware of the fact that you'll also need an InDesign license, since the filter actually is a plug-in?

The filter is good, though, the order of the stories in Transit matches the flow on the ID pages very well.

Post title: Or via SDL Trados Studio

You could also do it via SDL Trados Studio and its legacy converter (idml -> sdlxliff -> ttx -> translate then ttx -> sdlxliff -> idml), or ask someone who has Studio to do it for you. That's what I do, as I don't have the InDesign filter either, but I do have Studio, for just such purposes. The built-in Trados ttx filter in Transit works fine.
Contact me if you're interested. But be aware that, as CafeTran intimated, Studio requires the InDesign export format (idml), which you may have to get from your client if you don't already have the files in that format.

I checked with the client, and as I had expected, he said sending me IDML files for translation ist perfectly alright.

CafeTranTraining, thank you for the hint on the INDD version. I had wrongly assumed that it was still possible to get IDML files from the client and directly import them into Transit with the right filter (as used to be the case). But rechecking with STAR confirmed your warning.

If this was a project with a large volume or a long-term perspective, I'd further look into this. For the moment, however, I think I'll either install MemoQ as 45-day trial version for import of the IDML files. Or, even easier, dash over to my friend and colleague around the corner who owns Studio and ask her to import and export for me.

Thank you, Richard, for your offer.

I'm running Transit in VMware Fusion (on a Mac) and I noticed that I cannot move any pane to my secondary screen.

Is this a limitation of the virtualisation or isn't Transit capable to position panes on any other screen than the primary?

I think Transit does not allow you to move the panes outside of the main window borders. So, you need to stretch your main Transit screen to your second monitor (if you can do that in your virtual environment), and then you can move the panes over there. This works for me in Windows, I just tried.

Thanks, but I cannot verify that, since my Thunderbolt monitor has a low resolution and my iMac has a Retina screen. Anyway, I was just asking because of another thread here, where a user listed some CAT tools that can use multiple screens.

You could still try, even if the resolution of your two screens is different. As long as you can use the second monitor in extension mode, you should be able to stretch the Transit window over two screens. All you need to see is whether you can slide the pane between your monitors. You can see that regardless of the resolution, no?

Post title: Transit on two monitors works perfectly for me

Hi,

I have been using Transit NXT on 1.5 monitors ever since I got a 2nd monitor to work on. I have set my Transit to show the editor windows on 2 3rds of my first monitor with the Terminology window on the last 3rd and Fuzzy and Concordance windows on the upper half and lower half of the second monitor. That leaves half a monitor for my browser/original PDF file or other applications I need during translation.

Pulling Transit onto the second monitor and setting it as wide as I want it never turned out to be a problem. However, I use two identical monitors with identical resolution in a Windows 10 setup.

Besides separate video-cards, one could use a native video support (ATI -- HydraVision; nVidia -- nView), and there're plenty of third-party options like 'Actual Multiple Monitors'.

It's may be quite impressive to try ATI Eyefinity/NVIDIA Surround)

Find/replace thousand separators and decimal points using regex within Transit

Poster: Steveling2

Hello,

I've been asked at work to look into ways of finding and replacing thousand separators and decimal points in the target text within Transit (Version 4.0 SP7 Build 1268.14). Essentially we're trying to emulate the auto-localization function in Trados (and no, we can't switch to another software). The suggestions in the Regular Expressions section of Transit's Advanced Features manual work to some extent. For example,

Find: #([0-9]+)0\.#([0-9]+)1
Replace: #0,#1

will convert:
1.0 to 1,0
1.00 to 1,00
1.000 to 1,000

But then it gets trickier:
1.000.000 becomes 1,000.000

What's more, dates are also converted:
01.01.1900 becomes 01,01.1900

I've now spent quite some time experimenting, and as Transit appears to use its own flavour of regex there's no point in using a site like regexhero.net for testing. Is there a solution that doesn't ignore a second (or even third) thousand separator, but does ignore the sequence xx.xx.xxxx?

Thanks,
Steve

Can't you exclude the years and thousand separator from the search string?

Something like:

Find: #([0-9]+)0\.#([0-9]+)1(!.\((19|20)[0-9][0-9])|([0-9]+)))

(You'll have to tweak it.)

You can also close the language pairs in Transit and use a more advanced regular expressions tool like WildEdit: [url removed]
