I understand you very well, because I know Gaeilge a bit.
What kind of markups these are? Formatting?
You can also copy markups (you need to check the manual), something with holding the CTRL or ALT and then right mouse button or just by holding the right mouse. Some tags can be dublicated, but some not (these are usually structure markups like references or objects, pictures). But you can place as many formatting tags (bold, italics ...) as you wish. What matters is, that each opened markup should also be closed, or you will not be able to export.
You can also use those buttons for bold, italics etc. from the "Edit" page. If you need to make bold another word, you can use these buttons.
The order of the markups doesn't matter, as long as their inner order (opening and closing) is correct. There are many languages, where markups may be placed in different order.

How to insert a string at the start or end of all segments

My knowledge of Transit is becoming rusty. And I also think that a previously available feature to deactivate markup protection has been removed either from Transit, or more likely, from my internal memory.

What I'm trying to do is to add a string like "NotTranslated" to either the start or end of every segment with the status "Not Translated".

I can only find a regular expression for the segment end: backslash plus small o (\o). This expression does find all segment ends, but the replacement part doesn't work.

How come?

I just updated a VMware Fusion virtual machine running Windows 10 (Home) and I get this error when starting Transit NXT (latest version):

It would be nice if I could repair this error, without having to remove and re-install Transit.

I'm working in Transit NXT, and I would like to apply a filter to display only segments containing certain words in the source text. How can I do that?

Many thanks

Slow segment processing

Hello everyone,
I've faced a problem during my latest translation. I translate one huge file (40 000 words) inside a project and at some point Transit started working very slowly. Now it takes about 15 seconds to load the next segment. Terminology window and fuzzy proposals load fast, but Transit is still loading something. I even changed a working laptop, now it's 2.7 GHz, 8 Gb RAM and ssd - still working slowly. I also compacted reference material. Still no difference.

I am sure many of you faced such situations. What optimisation steps can I take to make this software work faster?

The sad point - Transit NXT support team doesn't respond to my messages. I feel like paying money for nothing. And not mentioning their user reference books with dozens of mistakes.

Post title: Use the Find window

If you have one of the more recent service packs of Transit NXT (i.e. from about service pack 7 onwards, I think), you can do this using the Find window. Just put in the word you want to search for, and then press the Filter button, which is just below "Find next". Make sure that your cursor is in the source window, though, otherwise the filter will be applied to the target, which is where your cursor normally is.

If you have an older version, you could either download and install the latest service pack (SP9 - this is preferable so you get the benefit of any other additions) or you could make use of the more in-depth filters on the View ribbon:
View > Create > Segment content > Enter your word here and press "Apply filter".

Whichever you use, you can then also use the "Synchronise view" option on the View ribbon to just see the target segments which correspond to the filter you have set on the source window. I.e. if you filter in the source and see only segments 6 and 9, you can then press "Synchronise view" to just see those segments in the target too.
When you're done, press "Switch off" to reset to the standard view (you'll need to do this twice, once for the source and once for the target, if you filtered on both windows).

Hope that helps!

I appreciate your help. It worked!
I had forgotten the filter creation option, that's why I could not select the needed segments!

To answer my own question: perhaps it's a solution to define a macro that is triggered by another keyboard shortcut.

Hi Hans,

another workaround I use for keyboard combinations that might not be easily available in certain circumstances is to add the specific task to the quick access toolbar via the user preferences menu and then use Alt+the number of the icon in the quick access toolbar.

However, for resetting a segment, this might be a more time-consuming solution than creating a macro with specific keyboard shortcut.

Best regards

What keyboard do you use? And which keys exactly are you pressing?
It seems there is some mixup between Backspace and Del, maybe because they share the same position on the keyboard. For the opposite case - how to send Ctrl+Alt+Del to the guest - see
[url removed]
and
[url removed]

Maybe applying some of the tips there in reverse could help.
Also, there might be some custom key mappings - maybe the section [url removed] #com.vmware.fusion.help.doc/GUID-8C5CE984-150F-4B7A-BAE4-791851F92CB2.html could help.

Since I don't have a Mac, I have no idea about the way VMWare Fusion works, so I'm just guessing here.

Hi,
In my experience (heavy user of Transit NXT) crashes occur rarely.
And when they occur it is usually during spellcheck/terminology check.

What usually works for me, is to save the translation files (just ctrl S is enough) after/before every step during the review process.

Hope this helps

Yes, with large dictionaries, Transit (Pro) freezes too (I wouldn't call it 'crashes', since no error message is displayed). It doesn't matter whether you use an Access termbase or an MS SQL database (which is supposed to cater for large data sets).

but large dictionaries do considerably slow down the performance of Transit. It sometimes takes minutes before the terminological entries appear.

This may not be directly relevant (as I have Transit Professional, still SP8), but I queried STAR recently about two-letter words/abbreviations that were not showing in the Terminology pane immediately after being added (via Rapid Entry). I thought it might be due to the size of my dictionary (55k+ records, many with numerous source and/or target entries).
One "cure" was to close down Transit then run it again. But they also told me about an interesting setting in ...\bin\STARTE.INI (open with a text editor, e.g. Notepad), section [settings]:
Update Interval = 30; minutes
which apparently is the default setting.
Let us know if changing this helps.
(Caveat: good practice is to save a copy of any modified .ini files elsewhere, as it's not clear whether or not software updates overwrite them. Does anyone know?)

Richard
