Post title: I suppose it takes time

Thank you all very much for your comments.

When asked, I always tell outourcers that I don't use CAT tools simply because I don't have time to learn how to use them.

I'll bear your comments in mind and when I have a free afternoon/morning, I'll try and discover how to make the screen bigger, etc. I'm sure if I look hard enough I'll be able to find some sort of online instruction manual.

When I posted my comment I was under a bit of pressure because I had to finish off a translation and I was running short of time.

To make things worse, I have just bought a new computer that uses Windows 8 and I don't think the version of Transit I'm using (Transit 3.0 Satellite) likes it very much. The segment I'm working on is no longer highlighted (even though I select 'Highlight active segment') and I'm havng to work in black and white, which makes seeing the fuzzy matches difficult. For the moment I'm using them as a sort of dictionary, copying what coincides.

I'm not one to give in easily and I'll try and sort it out.

Thank you all again for your help.

Transit 3.0 Satellite? That's a rather old version. I'm not sure whether my comments apply to this software.

BTW: You should update your Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 right away.

Dear 2nl

Thanks for the advice.

I'm pleased to know that there are newer versions of Transit available. I suppose my problems are due to using a new operating system with an old version of Transit.

I think some updating is needed :)

Wow... that's like complaining about ... Windows 3.1... or Pentium II or Commadore 64.
There was Transit XV (2001-2008) and now we have Transit NXT (2008-now).

It's the version the agency sent me. It might be worth asking them whether it's worth investing in a newer version.

Although judging by your comments, it might be a good idea to buy my own updated software, even if I stop working for the agency. You give me the impression that Transit really can make life easier.

I'm astonished that an agency distributes software that is no longer available from official sources for more than 10 years and forces their translators to work with it...

If you do not want to learn how translators worked in earlier days, you should switch to an up-to-date version of Transit and benefit from the enhancements of the recent 15 years...

I would like to tell anyone who's interested that I've just bought a licence for Transit NXT, albeit a time-limited one. However, if I decide to extend the licence/buy a different version, they will discount the money I've already paid from the price.

This evening I suddenly realised that I simply couldn't carry on working in such difficult conditions and I bought the software. I didn't buy a permanent licence because there aren't any available online, and I couldn't wait until tomorrow!

At the moment I'm really noticing the difference. At least I can read what's written! :)

I have a fresh installed Transit on Win 8.1 64-bit.

Is my observation correct that Transit NXT SP 7 (fix 8) runs in 32-bit mode only?

I have the following SQL Servers installed (perhaps from memoQ or Studio, perhaps from Transit itself):

I need the user name and password to make a connection:

Where to find it?

Will the SQL DB be 64-bit or 32-bit?

Hi All!

It is driving me crazy (and I am wasting a lot of time trying to find it out).

What is the shortcut to copy the source segment into the target (like F5 in DejaVu)?

I searched the 640-pages manual without finding it.

Thank you in advance,

Gilberto

Thank you very much.

Actually this shortcut is listed in the manual, but they call it "Undo translation of the current segment".

No wonder I could not find it with using the word "copy" in the search box.

Best,
Gilberto

In fact the shortcut *is* undoing the translation. Beside restoring the original source content, the function also sets back the segment status to "untranslated", i.e. the segment "looks and feels" like being never translated.

Not really sure, but I think you should manage your servers etc. via sql management studio.

If MSSQL is installed on the same PC, try the "trusted connection" option. This one does not require user name/password as you are already known by your PC.

By the way: AFAIK MSSQL support is an optional Transit feature. Do you have a Transit version and licence that enables MSSQL support?

Thank you Lynn,

Your method worked for me for Greek.
I copied the .aff, .dic files for the greek language which I found on the internet into "spell" folder and it really worked.

The fault message that showed up before solving it was:
The spellchecker for Greek is not installed/selected.

I own the following software:
Transit NXT Workstation
Version 4.0 SP 5

Thanks again

Hello,

I have translated a Transit project (NXT) withh several files.

All files are ok, except one:

from segment 703 the numbers of segmengt do not match

e.g. segment 703 in the source text is segment 702 in the translated text.

HOW can I correct this ?

Maybe this is a basic question, please be so kind and excuse me for that!.

Thank you very much.

Best regards

Maria

Dear Andrzej,

Thank you very much for replying. The problem was not that simple. It had to be solved by Transit Portugal.

Everything is ok when it ends ok (tudo está bem quando termina bem)

Thank you again.

"Error writing to file"

I recently installed Transit XV [SP 26] on 2 computers, a desktop with Windows 7 Pro and a new laptop with Windows 8.1.

When I open a file on my desktop, all seems to go well. I save the file in Projects (as indicated) and after opening Language pair, all is ready to start. I can translate, but after clicking on Save All, the project folder, where the file supposed to be saved, is empty (the folder was never created).

In short - everything seems to work, but Transit doesn't save the file in the folder it indicates and I can't find the (translated) file anyware on my desktop (????). Costs me already one job, there was nothing to sent to the client.

With my laptop it is a different story, it also doesn't save the file, but gives an error message "Error writing the file", after which Transit crashes. The only way to turn it off is with Ctrl - Alt - Delete.

So, 2 computers, each on its own way with problems saving files in Transit, that can't be a coincidence.

I translated a big file before with Transit on my old laptop with XP, and that worked just fine. Could it be a compatability question between my version of Transit and 7Pro/8.1?

Who has an answer?
