Splitting projecct in Transit | Should work with "Pack selected only"

Post title: Should work with "Pack selected only"

Hi Michal,

there *is* an out-of-box-solution and it is just the way you did it:
When packing a project with "selected files only", then the project package (PPF) contains only these files. Therefore, the returning translation (TPF) cannot contain more files i.e. cannot "overwrite" more than the selected files.

Therefore I am surprised it worked not as expected in your test.
Maybe you "played" to roles (sending project manager and receiving translator) on the same computer? If so, you may have mixed up the two projects...
Can you please describe in detail how you did your test?

Best regards

O.N.

PS: With fiddling around in the PRJ files, you can create more damage than benefit. It makes no sense if you can use normal functions to reach your goal in a easier, more convenient and safer way.

Hi Hans,

I suppose target fuzzy is not what you mean, is it? I stopped using the target language fuzzy shortly after installing Transit NXT as I found it confusing and hindering my train of thoughts.

I know that some colleagues say Trados Studio's Autosuggest function is one of the main advantages over the use of Transit. I have never seen a demonstration how it actually works, though.

Not really helpful, I am afraid.

Most efficient way to merge TermStar duplicates?

Hi,

does anyone know an efficient way to merge duplicates in TermStar? I have customer terminology dbs containing thousand of entries, and a lot among them are duplicates. I have already reimported the dictionaries and extracted all entries that are completely identical via the import menu. However, many of them are duplicates with differing target language entries that I would like to keep. But they clutter up my dictionary window during translation.

For smaller databases, I usually just filter the duplicates and merge them manually by copying and inserting. For these thousands of entries, this does not seem to be realistic.

Any suggestions?

TIA
Iris

Hi Iris,

Have you tried using Termstar?

If you open Termstar and then go
Wörterbücher (the button 'Glossaries' down to the left) -> Wörterbucher/Datenbanken ->
Wörterbucher/Datenbanken verwalten (manage) ->
Select your glossary (not the database) ->
Import/Export ->
Daten einarbeiten/hinzufügen (merge/add) ->
Doppelte Datensätze einarbeiten, neue Datensätze hinzufügen (merge duplicates, add new entries) ->
Neu (the button New to the right of the inset window) ->
Choose the field that Termstar should check to decide whether the entry is a duplicate; probably you will first expand the source language, then expand "Eintrag" (entry), select "Benennung" (term?, 'the word(s)') ->
Click "Definieren" (define) ->
Check the setting boxes you want ->
Verkställ (execute - the button to the right in the bottom line) ->
Ok -> Give it a name ->
Select the file to import (the file format might be troublesome) ->
Start
Open the glossary to check whether it works.

I used to treat them as 'synonyms' and imported the lines in the format:

source term TAB CHARACTER target one|target two|target three

I must have this import definition somewhere.

But first, you'll have to get from your raw data to this import format.

You can use Excel for this.

With Youtube service it is not a problem nowadays to see how this feature works. In other words, see it in action.

For DejaVu:

From about 01:55

For Trados Studio (even in German):

From about 06:28

Actually, as I don't believe in any kind of machine translation and at the same time I am not a lightning-speed typist, this feature improves greatly my general velocity of translation. And I cannot imagine how to live without it :-)

Good luck

Hello,

it is already working. I tried to "forward" translation and when I used "Unpack translation" function it rewrote just files I "Forwarded" and it kept changes made during translation just on the files I "Forwarded" and "Unpacked" via "Unpack translation"

Thanks for your help and replies.

Morphology-based terminology search does not work for French

Dear all,

I have the following behaviour:

The source segment in French contains term "garnitures" and the validated dictionaries assigned to the project include term "garniture", but the terminology window does not display those entries.

If I modify the source segment in the *.FRA file changing the term to "garniture", then the relevant entries appear in the terminology window.

I have the following settings. In User Preferences > Terminology Search, the option "Morphology-based" is checked. My Transit NXT version is 4.0 SP 9 Build 1632.25.

Is this a bug or is there some setting that is not correctly configured? Thanks.

Cheers, Manuel

Hi Manuel,

I just build the same scenario and the terminology displayed the entry correctly (with both SP9 and SP10).
So it's obviously not a bug, but something different.

One idea: Did you just turn on "morpho search" in the preferences? If so, save the project and reopen it again.
In some cases, changed terminology search settings apply for projects you open *after* changing the settings.

If that does not help: Can you tell us if morpho does not work in general or is it a special "garniture" problem?

Regards,

O.N.

Good morning Manuel,

Do I get it right: The morphological search works in general, except for "garnitures"? Very strange...

What happens
- if you enter a new dicitonary entry with "garniture" and its translation?
- if you enter a new dicitonary entry with "garnitures" and its translation?

Term recognition not updating

Recently the term recognition in my Transit NXT is working very slow/not updating. This means that once it recognizes a term, this terms remains constant in the terminology window. When I move to the next segment, the new recognized terms are highlighted in the text, but in the terminology window I still see the previous term. The terminology window won't update. And it stays the same when I move to the next segment etc. Only when I press Alt+T to insert a recognized term, it tries to update, but it then takes very long, in which time Transit freezes.

Does any one have an idea what causes this and how it can be solved?

Post title: exact form match masks lemma-based matches

Hello,

Just for the record, after a bit of testing and some help from STAR's support, this is what seems to happen, or rather, this is what I do to reproduce the issue:

I create two new entries in my termstar dictionary:
[A] opération -> operación SINGULAR
[B] opérations -> operaciones PLURAL

It seems the literal match of the term in plural form (in plural both in the dictionary --entry B-- and in the translation) masks/prevents the lemma-based match (lemma in the dictionary in entry A inflected form in the translation).

If the term appears in singular in the text (i.e. "opération"), there's a match with entry [A] above. If the term appears in plural in the text (i.e. "opérations"), there's a match with entry [B] above, but not with entry [A]. My expected behaviour in the latter case would be to see both entries.

In other words, the dictionary form of the source term (in the singular) is only matched when the term is used in the singular in the text. The dictionary form (singular lemma) of the term is NOT matched when the term is used in the plural in the text IF there is another dictionary entry where the source term is also in the plural form.

Cheers, Manuel

Thanks in advance for your help.
My guess: no this macro text won’t be imported.

Workaround: Press Alt+F8, select the macro to translate, in the VB editor select everything between Sub macro name and End Sub, press Ctrl+C. Paste the macro text into a new Word (or plain text) document. Etc.

Transit NXT v 4.0 SP10 build 1754.2

Hello,

Does anyone know if you can specifiy which projects a user sees in the 'Project browser' window? Or at least whether you can restrict access to projects via a Transit setting? Note that I don't mean remove access permissions in Windows – you can deny access to a project folder in Windows, but then Transit will complain that the working folder for project X is missing and offer to recreate it.

I can use the 'User roles' tool to restrict what translators can do/change/delete/etc. in Transit, but this doesn't affect what they see in the 'Project browser' window.

Thanks.

Hi Oiseau noir,

Thanks for your reply. Setting the user scope in a new project does hide the project from other users, but you cannot define the User, i.e. the User field is preset to my user and is uneditable. This means such a project is also hidden from a checker, for example, and you can't 'assign' a project to another user, only to yourself.

I've played around a bit with this, but I don't think there is a functionality that will do what we want. To be fair though, the company has been happily using Transit for years without such functionality, so it's not a big problem.

I just installed Service Pack 10 Update 3 for Transit/TermStar NXT under Windows 10, running in VMware Fusion.

The installation went smoothly, but after launching Transit, I had to select my user role again. Why?

When Transit was running, I noticed that I couldn't open the language pairs from a previously translated project.

I unpacked that project again. The original folder was overwritten. When I opened the language pairs, the segments were displayed in a tiny font and no font background for the currently selected segment of the tags was visible.

Navigating with Num+– was impossible.

Normally, these updates for service packs don't cause any troubles ...
